Why Does The JLPT Matter?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test is the standard way to prove your Japanese level. Japanese government agencies, schools and employers use it, which is why a JLPT certificate carries weight in immigration, study and work.

The sections below summarise the main uses. The rules are set by the relevant Japanese authorities and can change, so always confirm the current requirements with the Immigration Services Agency of Japan and the other official bodies before you plan.

What Each Level Is Used For

N2 or higherA benchmark for admission to higher education in Japan. • Foreign examinees who pass N1 or N2 are exempt from the Japanese-language test on the accreditation exam for completion of junior-high-level education in Japan.

Licensed Professions (N1)

An N1 certificate is required to apply for Japan's national exams for several professions. These include doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, veterinarians and other health professions. Overseas nursing school graduates also need N1 to take the assistant nurse exams, which each prefecture administers.

Details of the application requirements are published by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Where Does N5 Fit In?

Every level begins with N5. It gives you a clear target, proof of your progress and the first rung on the ladder towards N4 and beyond. For learners planning to study Japanese in Japan, N5 already meets the language requirement for Japanese language institutions that enrol Student visa students.

Even if you are learning for interest, a JLPT level gives your study structure and a milestone to aim for.
