How The Five Levels Are Organised

The levels run from N5 (easiest) to N1 (most difficult). N5 and N4 measure understanding of basic Japanese, mainly learned in class. N2 and N1 measure understanding of Japanese used in a broad range of scenes in everyday life. N3 is the bridging level between the two groups.

The ability expected at each level is described in terms of language activities, Reading and Listening. Vocabulary and grammar are not listed separately in the descriptions, but they are needed to carry out those activities at every level.

Which Level Should You Start With?

  • Complete beginner: start with N5. It builds hiragana, katakana, basic kanji, simple grammar and slow, short listening.
  • You can already read basic passages and follow slow conversation: consider N4.
  • Comfortable with everyday Japanese and ready for headlines and longer text: N3 and above.
  • Not sure? Take a free demo class or ask us. We can tell you where you stand.
Levels build on each other. Everything you learn for N5 carries into N4 and beyond.

From N5 To The Next Level

N5 is the first milestone. After it, the step to N4 widens the basic vocabulary and kanji and moves to familiar daily topics in more connected passages. From there, each level adds speed, range of topics and complexity.

Our beginner batch is built for N5, and we plan to continue with higher levels after this batch.
