What Is JLPT N5?
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the most widely recognised test of Japanese for non-native speakers. It has five levels, from N5 (easiest) to N1 (hardest). N5 is the starting point.
At N5 you are expected to understand and use basic Japanese: read simple sentences written in hiragana, katakana and common kanji, follow slow everyday conversation, and handle familiar topics such as introductions, numbers, time, shopping and directions.
What Does The JLPT N5 Syllabus Cover?
The exam tests three areas. Preparing for each one separately makes the syllabus feel much smaller.
| Area | What you need | How to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Language knowledge: writing and vocabulary | Hiragana, katakana, about 100 basic kanji, everyday words | Daily reading and writing practice, flashcards |
| Language knowledge: grammar and reading | Basic sentence patterns and particles, short simple passages | Make your own sentences, read graded texts |
| Listening | Short, slow conversations on everyday topics | Listen daily, shadow the speaker, take mock listening tests |
A Simple Study Plan For Complete Beginners
You do not need any Japanese background. A sensible order saves a lot of confusion.
- Step 1: Hiragana. Learn all the hiragana first. Everything else in Japanese is built on it.
- Step 2: Katakana. Used for foreign words and names. Once you know hiragana this goes faster.
- Step 3: Core grammar and vocabulary. Learn the basic sentence structure, particles and the most common everyday words.
- Step 4: Basic kanji. Add the roughly 100 N5 kanji gradually, always with the words they appear in.
- Step 5: Listening and mock tests. Practise with listening and full-length papers so the exam format feels familiar.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
- Relying on romaji (English letters) for too long instead of learning hiragana properly.
- Memorising kanji alone instead of learning them inside words and sentences.
- Skipping listening practice until the last few weeks.
- Studying in long irregular bursts instead of a little every day.
